Rihanna Inks Long-term Deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation

Jay Z doesn’t have to worry about is Barbados beauty Rihanna going anywhere anytime soon as she has reportedly signed a long-term deal to keep throwing up the ROC.


DIVA IN MOTION: Rihanna has signed a new long-term contract with Roc Nation as part of its recent deal with UMG, HITS industry insider I.B. Bad reports in his latest dispatch from the frontlines, posting here tomorrow. Her future releases will probably continue to go through IDJ, continuing a productive long-term relationship with the Steve Bartels-led label, even as Roc Nation builds its own brand. On that subject, does Jay Brown (who manages Rihanna and Shakira) have the bandwidth to become a top major-label exec? And where does ex-Mercury U.K. label head Jason Iley fit into Jay Z’s scheme? Jay Z continues to solidify Roc Nation securing the highly successful Rihanna as well as signing Timbaland to Roc Nation providing assurance for more hits to come from the label.

Vivendi SA’s VIV.FR +0.75% Universal Music Group said Monday it had inked a multiyear deal with rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter to house his music label Roc Nation, snagging the coveted rights to release Mr. Carter’s next album along with the forthcoming records of other top-selling artists including Rihanna. Mr. Carter said the deal allowed his five-year-old Roc Nation to “continue to operate as an independent label with the strength, power and reach of the best major.” Universal didn’t disclose the financial terms of the deal.
