The Bay Bridge is basically a pencil-thin piece of bent metal that stretches roughly five miles above the Chesapeake Bay. The view from the top is probably really pretty if you aren’t squeezing your eyes shut and praying to gods you don’t even believe in that you’ll make it through this. The fucking thing sways when it’s windy, and the lanes are roughly as wide as a Trader Joe’s parking space. It’s the drive I hate most in the world. So when we were coming up on the bridge, I wrestled back control of the car stereo, demanding that we stop the endless rotation of Lion King soundtrack deep cuts and asked if we could please listen to Beats 1 Radio instead. Nicki Minaj was a little pissed that her “ Anaconda ” video had been shut out of some key categories, and she voiced that displeasure on Twitter: “If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well… When the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination.” This was pretty clearly a larger point about race and culture, but old Nicki supporter Taylor Swift, who did get nominated for those major categories, took it as a personal attack: “I’ve done nothing but love & support you. Starring in a parody of "The Walking Dead," Kid Cudi survives a zombie apocalypse in the sketch comedy show "Comedy Bang! Bang!" Kid Cudi stars in a parody of "The Walking Dead" called "The Shaking Head."  Hats off to Cudi's acting skills—when sharing the scene with the pro comic Scott Aukerman, no difference seemed to exist between each of their acting abilities. Kid Cudi's upcoming studio album, Speedin' Bullet To Heaven is still in the works, but Cudi mentioned earlier on in the month that it's half done! Last Sunday, July 12th, we launched Funk Volume’s 7th Annual Don’t Fu[n]k Up Our Beats Rap Contest on HipHopDX. #DFUOB7 is the longest running rap contest on the internet. It allows artists to purchase and download beats, create a 2 minute track, make and post a music video, and share their submission for votes from their peers. From there they win some dope prizes, including cash and an opportunity to perform as part of the 2015 Funk Volume Tour. One of the newer initiatives at HipHopDX is to provide real-life, “music industry 101” experience for artists looking to get their music heard. We currently live in an era where artists can create their own magic from the start.
