B-13 Peer Review Miley Cyrus has been twerking, tongue wagging and channeling her inner “rachet” since the summer and coincidentally began working with Mike WIll Made It around the same time. According to the eccectric pop star, her and her new collaborator have discussed and believe racism is imbued in the perception of their working relationships.
Talking with Rolling Stone, Miley says there is a racially-driven double standard when describing her working with the Atlanta producer:
Me and [producer] Mike WiLL were talking about it. He said, “For me, my biggest achievement has been working with a white girl—but for a white girl to work and associate with black producers, you’re being ratchet.” He’s like, “Why am I on the come-up if I work with you, but if you work with me, it’s like you’re trying to be hood?” It’s a double-standard. I didn’t really realize it, but people are still racist.
She also attributes a level of racism to the media outrage over her scandalous performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards which included “twerking” from her backup dance crew “L.A. Bakers”. :
If I had come out [at the VMAs] with all white-girl dancers, and done the fucking “Cha Cha Slide”— same outfit, same everything — it wouldn’t have been bad. But because of who I came out with, people got upset. Because they were girls from the club. They had thick a**es. They were twerking.
