Bobby Shmurda fighting for his life after prison fight leaving him in critical condition

Bobby Shmurda is fighting for his life after a weekend jail brawl with two other inmates at Rikers Island Correctional Facility, Sheriff A.J. Goldenberg announced Monday.

Just before noon Sunday, jail workers called 911 for an inmate who had been assaulted, Bobby Shmurda, 20, the sheriff said in a prepared statement.

He got into an argument with two other male inmates in a medium security cell block during lunchtime, and the dispute turned violent.

“An officer outside the cell block heard and saw the altercation as soon as it occurred,” the sheriff said. “He and other officers intervened immediately and broke it up.”

No weapons were involved, but several blows with fists ensued. After Bobby Shmurda was knocked to the ground, he was kicked in the face multiple times, Goldenberg wrote.

Bobby was taken to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward with injuries to his head and face. He underwent surgery and, at last report, was in critical condition where doctors are fearing for his life, Goldenberg said.

Bobby Shmurda had only been at the jail since December 17 and is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, assault in the first degree and other additional charges.

The New York County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the incident for presentation to a grand jury for possibly criminal charges.
