Lil Wayne not only dropped a TIDAL exclusive today, he's also the company's newest co-owner.
Patrick Lyons@P_Lyons_Consequence of Sound reports that he's "joining the streaming service as an artist owner," and cites a press release from TIDAL employee Vania Schlogel, who writes:
“We’re honored for Lil Wayne to join TIDAL. His eagerness to release an exclusive TIDAL track and schedule a TIDAL X performance is just another example of how passionately artists care about getting their music to fans.”
No word on how (or if) this will affect his ongoing struggle to leave Cash Money, but expect more Weezy x TIDAL content soon.
“TIDAL is a great way to share music directly with fans,” said Lil Wayne via the statement. “I’m hyped for people to hear my latest track and can’t wait to show fans love through a special TIDAL X.”
Wayne joins the sixteen other previously announced musicians—Alicia Keys, Arcade Fire, Beyoncé, Calvin Harris, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Jack White, Jason Aldean, J. Cole, Jay Z, Kanye West, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Usher, if you needed a refresher—as a co-owner of the service. The rapper has a huge following and millions of fans around the world, which Jay Z and company are hoping will find their way over to Tidal now that he’s a member.
For those diehard Lil Wayne fans who are unsure if they want to commit to ten dollars a month for Tidal, the service is offering a free one month trial, which is as close to “freemium” as it looks like the platform will get.
