B-13 Peer Review Flashback: The Sequence

The first & pioneer of all female hip-hop Groups

Hailing straight from Columbia, SC “The Sequence” first all-girl hip hop female group childhood friends—Cheryl Cook (Cheryl the Pearl), Gwendolyn (Blondy) Chisolm and Angie Brown Stone (Angie B)— who were high school cheerleaders. The Sequence asked Sylvia Robinson, CEO of the noted Sugar Hill Records Label for a chance to audition backstage at a Sugar Hill Gang concert held right in their city at Township Auditorium 1979 where they performed original written song in high-school “Funk You Up”.  


The Sequence, were discovered immediately by Sylvia Robinson, she took them under her wings making the most of opportunity for childhood friends to become stars. After being the 2nd group signed by Sugar Hill in 1979, The Sequence’s first single “Funk You Up” went gold in just three weeks’ time and sold over 500,000 units of a 12’ inch single 1st of all female hip-hip groups in the history of Hip Hop. The Sequence paved the way for future Hip Hop artist. The Sequence toured with historic acts, including label mates The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Funky Four Plus One, The Crash Crew, just to name a few. Other memorable hits crafted from the minds of The Sequence include the remake of Parliament –Funkadelic “Funky Sound (Tear the Roof Off)’, “Monster Jam” feat. Spoonie Gee, tracks from the group’s three LPs: “Sugar Hill Presents “The Sequence” and “The Sequence Party.” 

The Sequence, has worked with music legends on tour with O’Jays, Gap Band/Charlie Wilson, Cameo, Chaka Khan, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Evenlyn Champagne, Jones Girls and many more.  These ladies open many doors for female artists like Queen Latifiah, Salt & Pepper, Yo Yo, Mc Lyte, Lil Kim, Rasheeda, Trina, Missy Elliott, and Nicki Minaj among others. Their most notable single “Funk You Up” was later used by Dr. Dre for his 1995 single “Keep Their Heads Ringin” En Vogue, Trina & Jazzy Pha “The Birthday Song” then later Erika Badu use the sample as well it was also featured in the movies Ice Cube “Friday”, Eddie Murphy “Doctor Dolittle”. This group is also featured by Adam Bradley the Yale author of Anthology of Rap.

Cheryl also being a gifted writer wrote for the Sugar Hill Gang, such songs as 8th Wonder, Apache, & In the Fast Lane. For the West Street Mob, she wrote, Let’s Dance & Break Dance. Her writing abilities didn’t stop there because she wrote a lot of the songs for The Sequence, such as Funk You Up, Tear the Roof Off and Monster Jam. A lot of music icons such as Buster Rhymes, Master P. , Missy Elliot, De La Soul, Jennifer Lopez and many more that she respects have sampled her work and she is very grateful for it.  Cheryl new quest is gearing up for her company; Black Bottom Entertainment, LLC and under her label she will be dropping her first new written single entitled “Got Love”.  The “comeback album” will reflect her image; with promises to be a new part of history. “Cheryl the Pearl” would like to take this moment to thank everyone in the music industry in advance for welcoming her back and for their continuous support.

Blondy is back reentering the music scene with an evolved style and look! Still carrying the essence as a powerful, amped-up diva with lyrical genius, her latest single soon to be released “What U Doin Here” promises to deliver a universal funk with truth, goal to engage crowds and best of all – get those freaks dancing again. 

Blondy has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience working back end of the music business as personal assistant and road manager for several years on behalf of Angie Stone. 

Blondy had the privilege to tour and meet with the most gifted artist in R&B and Hip Hop - Prince, Josh Groban, Maxwell, Luther Vandross, Gerald Levert, Babyface, Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx, and Michelle Williams. Gwendolyn “Blondy” Chisolm exciting venture is her nonprofit organization Education Through Talent which embodies her heart and spirit. She aims to give every student maintaining a C average the opportunity to further their education by providing workshops and training for youth within the arts and entertainment disciplines. Talented students from the ages of 13 to 18 will be assigned to specific learning curriculums based upon their initial performance auditions and career interests. 

The areas of concentration are communications, business management, television & film production, music production and audio engineering along with hip hop literacy.  The learning objectives are designed to help students have college preparatory opportunities that may be considered for college credits, internships, scholarships, and awards.

Angie B rose to fame in the late 1970s as member of the hip hop trio The Sequence. Soon after, Angie B began working with futuristic rap group Mantronix and singer Lenny Kravitz. In the early 1990s, she became a member of the R&B trio Vertical Hold.
In 1999, Stone released her solo debut album Black Diamond on Arista Records, which was certified gold and spawned the R&B single “No More Rain (In This Cloud)”. After the transition to J Records, she released another gold selling album, 2001's Mahogany Soul, which included "Wish I Didn't Miss You", Stone's most successful single. She has since released five albums: Stone Love (2004), The Art of Love & War (2007), Unexpected (2010), Rich Girl (2012), and Dream (2015). Stone has appeared on television shows such as VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club and TV One's R&B Divas, and starred in movies such as The Fighting TemptationsPastor Brown and School Gyrls.
Stone has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. She has been most successful on the R&B charts, with four top 10 albums, including a number one, and 10 singles, including a top 10.
