B-13 Peer Review's Unsung:  The Merc Boys

By: Willy Bill

I was looking for raw and unapologetic voice of truth from the black male perspective to take on as a talent to manage. I have flirted with such artists as Christian Keys, (Before he was an actor that everyone has come to know; he was an artist) Chad Moss, (At that time he had parted ways with his management.) Plies, Hopsin, Ledisi, and Giovanca just to name a few. In my search I happened upon this group called the MERC Boys. When I picked them up they didn't have much support from their followers. They only $13 within weeks I turned it into $600. My projection for the next show was anywhere between $3000- $6000 in door and CD sales. They were electrifying however, before they could reach their full potential in the way that I had planned; an A&R from Capital Records  started whispering sweet nothings in their ear. They abandoned ship before their potential could be reach; moreover, just as they were warned Capitol Records signed them and shelved them, and The group disbanded.

These guys were the projected zeitgeists of their time. They spoke their truth and people from everywhere wanted a piece of their success. They played at the Haven in 2009. I have been receiving calls for them until 2018. They were a great find and I groomed them for success they got a taste of that success at a club called the Haven in downtown Hollywood where their concert was standing room only. The place was so packed that there was a line outside waiting to get in. The performance was intoxicating. Al was the college boy the ladies man. 5th Ave was the gangster legitimately so. Brick-top was the white man in a black world. Sosa was the family man, a provider, a father that did the right thing and found himself in jail for it and his family destroyed. Each of them spoke their truth to the audience and they responded.

I was in the crowd when Sosa performed is part. I turned around to look at the audience there was not a dry eye in the house! That night they were treated like celebrities and that is were the downfall began. The world never got to witness the power of raw truth from the perspective of 4 men that had their struggles memorialized in their music that reached all men.

I miss them all and would like to see them together again...
