Oh, THAT’S Your Sibling? Celebrity Siblings People Don’t Talk (Or Know) About
We know about Brandy and Ray J. The Joan and John Cusacks. The Gyllenhaals. Bey and Solange. But not everybody has become famous because of what their sibling is doing, and not every brother and sister in Hollywood do everything together and are everywhere together. Don’t believe me? Check out a few brother and sister pairings that many people don’t even know about.
Vanessa and Chris Williams
While we know Vanessa for her many endeavors, including being Miss America, being a popular actress and singer, and now strutting her stuff on Broadway, don’t forget about her brother Chris! At second glance, they look pretty similar (he has those stark blue eyes and cheekbones too). He’s also tried his hand at Hollywood success, making appearances in Californication, the movie Friday After Next (he tried to rob Kat Williams’ store), and the movie Lottery Ticket.Zooey and Emily Deschanel
Over the last few years, big-eyed sis Zooey Deschanel (to the left) has been getting all of the attention because of her hilarious Fox show New Girl and because of her beauty contracts with Pantene and Rimmel (and her work in the group She & Him). But before all that, big sister Emily was the It-girl, getting a lot of attention for her work as Dr. Temperance Brennan on the Fox show (coincidence!) Bones.
Sommore and Nia Long
What do these two have in common? Well, they love and look great with short haircuts, and oh yeah, they’re sisters. Half-sisters, but who really introduces their siblings as such? Anywho, Sommore the raunchy comedian, and Long, the gorgeous actress, share the same father. Sommore has stated in past interviews that the two are pretty close and try to hook up for holidays.Elizabeth and Mary Kate/Ashley Olsen
Of course, the Olsen twins are best known for their early years starring on Full House, their many adorable movies as teenagers, and as adults, stacking that bread together as fashion designers. But they’re not the only family members out here doing big things. Their younger sister Elizabeth has made quite a name for herself as an indie actress. Looking eerily similar to her sisters (but much taller), Elizabeth garnered many a nomination for her first film, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and is known for her work in the movies Silent House and Liberal Arts. She’s working on the upcoming Godzilla remake now.LisaRaye and Da Brat
The famous rapper and the famous lover of all-white everything/actress are half-sisters who share the same father. LisaRaye is the eldest sister of the two and they share a pretty tight bond. When DaBrat was in jail, LisaRaye kept people up-to-date on how she was holding up and Da Brat has been pretty vocal about how close the two really are.Julia and Eric Roberts
You’ve seen his face, but you rarely see these two together. While Julia has become an Oscar winner and is known as “America’s Sweetheart,” her brother Eric has had some success in Hollywood too, mostly because he’s been in more films than I feel like counting (he’s literally been in a movie almost every year since 1978). So he actually was in the business before his famous sister. Eric struggled with drug abuse for many years, and was recently on the show Celebrity Rehab in 2010 for dependence on medical marijuana. He’s the dad of young Hollywood starlet Emma Roberts.Chris and Liam Hemsworth
If you weren’t aware, the fine actor who plays Thor (Chris, to the left) is the older brother of actor Liam Hemsworth, also known as the fiance of Miley Cyrus who we barely see like that anymore. The Aussie brothers look exactly alike (though Chris is obviously more deliciously buff), and they actually have an older brother named Luke who acts as well.Eddie and Charlie Murphy
Brooklyn-bred brothers! While Eddie Murphy was blowing up as a stand-up comedian and actor, his brother was serving in the Navy as a boiler technician. When he got out, he tried to get into showbiz as well with the help of his brother, working in music as a producer, taking small film roles, and finally getting a big break in the Chris Rock classic, CB4. Many of his encounters in Hollywood alongside his famous brother were recounted in hilarious fashion when he was a writer and star on Chappelle’s Show.Kirk and Candace Cameron
He played the role of Mike Seaver on the classic show Growing Pains. She was of course known as the eldest of the Tanner sisters on Full House. They were both bitten by the acting bug young, and were part of very successful television shows as young people. And while Candace went on to get married (Candace Cameron Bure to you) and acts here and there, her brother became a born-again Christian who caught some heat for going on CNN and saying homosexuality is “detrimental, and ultimately destructive.”Jesse and Hallie Kate Eisenberg
Despite Jesse being a big star now, it was his little sister Hallie who obtained stardom first. In the late ’90s she was known as the “Pepsi Girl,” was in the movie Paulie, The Insider with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino, and the TV movie The Miracle Worker as Helen Keller. Her brother gained his first critical acclaim in the indie film The Squid And The Whale, and of course became an A-lister after doing The Social Network, playing Mark Zuckerberg. The two were raised in a secular Jewish family.Mark and Donnie Wahlberg
First off, did you know that Donnie Wahlberg is dating Jennie McCarthy right now?Now that we got that out of the way, were you also aware that the New Kids on the Block star and actor is the elder brother of actor and cutie-patootie Mark Wahlberg? The Boston-born brothers (Dorchester to be exact) clearly had a thing for the spotlight, as Mark of course made it big as a rapper with Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch and later as an actor. But did you know that Mark was one of the original members of New Kids on The Block? He was a member along with brother Donnie, Danny, Jordan and Jonathan Knight, but he eventually quit and Joey McIntyre took his spot.
Matt and Kevin Dillon
You know Matt from a whole host of movies (did you know he was in Native Son?), including Crash, There’s Something About Mary, and Wild Things. But you know his brother Kevin from his years as Johnny “Drama” on Entourage, though he’s been on-screen in movies and on television since the mid-80s. Kevin is the younger brother of the two, but he told the Huffington Post that he did feel like he was in his brother’s shadow for a long time: “I was called Matt Dillon’s brother my whole career basically until “Entourage” broke me free of that and now people call me Johnny Drama instead. They still don’t know that I’m Kevin but I don’t care.”Amy and David Sedaris
One is an acclaimed author, the other can be seen sharing the benefits of using Downy scent boosters in your laundry. But seriously, David Sedaris is the humorist behind such awesome books as Barrel Fever, N*ked, and Me Talk Pretty One Day. Younger sister Amy, who Sedaris often mentions as the quirky sibling in his essays, is known for playing the hilarious main character of Jerri on the now-defunct Comedy Central show Strangers With Candy. When she’s not selling Downy products, she’s appearing on shows like The Good Wife and The Closer, as well as other popular movies like Dance Flick and Old Dogs. The two siblings often collaborate.
River and Joaquin Phoenix
The late actor was a pretty big teen star after playing in classic movies like Stand by Me, Running on Empty and My Own Private Idaho, but at the peak of his fame (and around the time when he was said to be the lead for Basketball Diaries, a role that eventually went to Leonardo DiCaprio), Phoenix died of a drug overdose on heroin and coke. His brother, actor Joaquin, sadly, was there at the time that River collapsed from the drugs while they were at a club in Hollywood. He would later go on to have a pretty prominent acting career, including getting an Academy Award nomination for Gladiator, Walk The Line and last year’s indie hit The Master.
