Macklemore’s ‘Thrift Shop’ Is First Indie Hit to Top Charts in Nearly Two Decades

No, you didn’t hit your head and wake up in 1994 — an independent artist has topped  the Billboard Hot 100  for the first time in nearly 20 years, and for only the second time in history. Thanks to their brassy, bargain-hunting hit  “Thrift Shop,”  Seattle hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis join ’90s folk-pop singer Lisa Loeb in the elusive club of  artists who reached number one without a label . Macklemore, born Ben Haggerty, has been recording music since the early 2000s, only began getting noticed this fall with the release of  The Heist , his full-length debut album, recorded with production partner Ryan Lewis. Macklemore makes his strong feelings about big labels no secret on the album: In a song titled  “Jimmy Iovine”  — named for the chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M who helped make another white rapper, Eminem, famous — Macklemore takes down record contract politics with the unequivocal closing line, “I’d rather be a starving artist than succeed at getting f—-ed

She Wows 'American Idol' Judges -- again Once again, Candice Glover brought the judges and the audience to their feet. The St. Helena Island native performed Ben E. King's "I (Who Have Nothing)" on Wednesday night during her first performance competing as an "American Idol" top 10 finalist. This week's theme was "Music of American Idols." Contestants chose a song a previous winner either sang on the show or released afterward. Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks sang the King classic in the Top 11 and again in the Top 3 that season. After Glover sang, the judges again lavished praise on the 23 year old. "Just know that if we had more time, we'd still be standing and clapping right now," judge Keith Urban said. "I love you so much. There's so many things I love about you, I'd never have enough time." Read more here: http://www.islandpacket.com/2013/03/13/2419004/st-helenas-candice-glover-wows.ht

The video in question is for Foxx's tune "Twisted," which will presumably make its way out into the world in the coming weeks. "It was total pandemonium," Foxx told  MTV News  about the shoot. "It was so much fun. Me and Kim, we decided to shoot it out in California. And Miley, you know, had been reaching out to Kim via Twitter. And then she reached out to me." According to Foxx, Miley's appearance was totally unexpected. "She surprised me and came out to set," Foxx explained. "She said she wasn't going to be able to make it... so she surprised me and came and we had a great time." While we'll have to wait to hear the tune, Lil' Kim recently announced she's  back in the studio . Maybe Miley will throw a verse on her album? Watch Behind-The-Scenes of Tiffany Foxx
