Damon Wayans Jr. shot the pilot for the Fox fall sitcom New Girl, but had to bow out when ABC renewed Happy Endings, the ensemble comedy about six Chicago friends that became a surprise favorite with critics and audiences. Not that he minds — he feels right at home playing the well-dressed Brad Williams, a laid-back guy married to a control freak (Eliza Coupe).

“I don’t sweat the small stuff; we kind of balance each other out,” said Wayans Monday night at an event for the series at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. “I like that he gets to keep it light,” says Wayans Jr., who shares his character’s easy-going nature. “I’m just like that. I think that’s why they got me.”

Wayans Jr. got his start in television by appearing on his father's (Damon Wayans) comedy series My Wife and Kids. Wayans Sr. returned the favor by guest starring as his son’s dad last season — a role that might be reprised. “It’s not a done deal but it’s a strong possibility,” Wayans Jr. confirms, noting that other members of his showbiz family might show up as well.

A stand-up comic at heart, Wayans Jr. performs his act at clubs after work and on weekends. “I love the instant gratification. With television you do the job and wait for months before you see it,” he says. “With standup they either laugh right now ... or not.”
