The real reason Will Smith turned down 'Django Unchained'
Will Smith has revealed that he turned down Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained because he felt he was not being offered the lead role.
Smith was thought to be in the running for Tarantino’s Oscar-winning ode to the spaghetti western way before production began. Ultimately, Jamie Foxxended up in the role of Django and many might have presumed that Smith could have been uncomfortable with the movie’s combination of anti-slavery friction and bloody violence.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, however, Smith has revealed he simply felt the part of dentist-turned-bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) was the real lead.
Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead… The other character was the lead! I was like, ‘No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!’
It’s worth noting that while Waltz did win an Oscar for his portrayal of Dr. Schultz, it was a Best Supporting Actor award, so we’re not sure why Smith had his panties in a bunch over not being the lead. In the version we saw, Django was the titular character, killed plenty of bad guys and was demonstrably the lead of the movie.
Maybe Smith was then and is now just making excuses as he adds, “Just not for me.” We couldn’t agree more.
Perhaps, seeing the phenomenal success of Django, Smith will consider a part in Tarantino’s next revisionist masterpiece, Killer Crow?
